INTERNATIONAL TAXATION/TAX RESIDENCY
We are knowledgeable in many matters of international taxation and tax residency. Chief among these deals with the issue of Canadian tax residency. If you are emigrating from Canada you will need to consider whether or not to obtain a Ruling as to your tax status. We are experienced in obtaining such Rulings. If you are immigrating to Canada you will also wish to seek our services in order to properly establish your tax residency with our country.
Canadian taxation status is based on residency not citizenship. Your residency tax status will affect the tax withheld on any transactions and your tax filing requirements and final taxes due for both Canada and the country of residence.
Residency can be a very complex determination based on a number of guidelines established by the Canada Revenue Agency. Generally if you normally reside outside of Canada with your regular activities based in that country then you are a Non Resident. Check with your accountant or advisor or the Canada Revenue Agency (website) for specific details.
It is the Member’s responsibility to determine residency for taxation status.
If your address on file is not a Canadian address then you are classified as a non-resident for Canadian Tax purposes. It is also the Member’s responsibility to maintain the current address of residency with Actra Fraternal Benefit Society.
From time to time, it may be necessary for us to require a letter of confirmation of residency prior to proceeding with any transactions.
PLEASE NOTE: You should not request an address change if you will be temporarily residing in another country. Once a non-Canadian address is set up, then you will automatically be designated as a non-resident for any transactions that occur while your address is set for that foreign country.
